Welcome to our security lighting section. Security Lights comes in differing styles one of the most common being found in many domestic properties is a 150 or 500 watt tungsten halogen security light controlled by a movement sensor PIR. This type of lighting has its benefits but also has some disadvantages, as in many locations it is inappropriately installed and other types of security lighting could make for a better choice. The benefits are generally the cost and availability they are ideal for localised security when you need good light for short periods. You may wish to consider our remote control security lighting range that is of the best quality and can be used to switch the lighting on and off via a hand held switch as well as via remote PIR.
The main disadvantages with this type of flood lighting is the fact that they only come on once the criminal has picked a house and crossed its boundaries. This is often too late and does not deter criminals when it matters most, namely when they are selecting a nice dark house or garden area to approach. They emit a strong, intrusive bright light that is often a nuisance to neighbours and their property. Fittings where the PIR can be overridden to be switched on permanently can also cause problems between neighbours. When located to near roads, they can also be dangerous shining a glare into oncoming traffic. If not correctly adjusted and aimed security lights of this type can cause dark shadows due to their high intensity light. They are extremely energy unfriendly and require regular lamp replacements. They are easy for intruders to tamper with unless installed at the recommended height of more than 3 meters. Finally the budget range models can be so unreliable that they are totally discredited by neighbours and the authorities few people will check why a light has activated, assuming that is always coming on and off

Alternatives that you may wish to consider are highly efficient low energy lighting fittings controlled by a photo-electric cell also known as a dusk to dawn sensors. Such low wattage lighting that is permanently on during the hours of darkness will provide a more than adequate level of illumination. This type of lighting is available in different colour tones from the SON and SOX lamps that give a fimiliar yellow street light glow, to the mercuty and hailde lamps that give a whieter light as seen in football stadiums etc all generally giving more light output for less running cost. It is in no way as harsh and is more environmentally friendly than tungsten halogen floodlights. A low wattage unit placed out of easy reach at a height of three to four meters can illuminate an average rear garden, this will help to create a reassuring environment and play its part in deterring the burglar from selecting that house in the first place not being sure if the property is occupied. The running costs are minimal as the low wattage lamps ensure that even though the light may be on all night, the cost to operate is no more than a few pounds a year. A time clock could also be included in the installation giving a greater control over switching your security measures on and off
PIR controlled tungsten halogen floodlights can cause some problems, and because of some of the issues stated above, they may provide little in the way of extra security for household security measures. They are not always the only route to persue in security terms. Alternativly, low wattage energy efficent security lighting provides a more constant and controllable level of lighting with fewer shadows. Also be aware that stand alone PIR and dusk to dawn sensors can be used to switch most types of lighting, maybe you would like your favourite Victorian lantern fitting or lamppost to double as a security light well now it can
In conclusion, for security purposes, and from a design perspective, the first choice in security lighting is not as obvious at it may first appear consider the low energy dusk to dawn controlled light. Whilst there is a place for PIR controlled lighting, it is worth considering all the options.
